Bollywood movies that are actually copied from Hollywood

Being one of the biggest film industry, you’d expect Bollywood to produce original and unique movies just like any other film industry would but of course you’d be wrong. Bollywood produces around a thousand movies a year which sounds quite impressing until you actually watch some of them and realize most of them are complete rip offs of Hollywood movies with no originality about them.

Now making a remake of a movie isn’t all bad but taking a classic and turning it into your typical Indian movie with item songs and whatnot is a crime in itself, I mean who would want to see Hannibal Lecter in a love song?

Here’s a list of Bollywood movies that are actually copied from Hollywood

  • The Killer (2006)/ Collateral (2004)

The 2006 Bollywood movie The Killer is a total rip off of Tom Cruise’s Crime/Thriller movie Collateral and to make things worse, they got Emraan Hashmi playing Jamie Foxx who was nominated for an Oscar.

IMDB rating
The Killer 4.6
Collateral 7.6

A clip from the Indian version.

  • Chor Machaaye Shor (2002)/Blue Streak (1999)

Now I love Blue Streak, I’ve watched it way too many times, it’s a simple and short comedy movie and what Bollywood did with this simple movie is turned it about two and half hour long, added girls and songs in it and has a well deserved 4.2 rating on IMDB

IMDB rating
Chor Machaaye Shor 4.2
Blue Streak 6.3

  • Papi Gudia (1996)/Child’s Play (1988)

We’ve all seen Child’s play and we all know the story, well maybe Bollywood director Lawrence D’Souza didn’t and came up with the story of Papi Gudia on his own. You never know.

IMDB rating
Papi Gudia 2.0
Child’s Play 6.6

Does it look like a scene from a Horror movie?

  • Chachi 420 (1998)/Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

This Robin Williams’ hilarious classic was copied by Bollywood and somehow managed to get better reviews than the original for once maybe Indians are better at crossdressing I don’t know.

IMDB rating
Chachi 420 7.4
Mrs. Doubtfire 6.9

  • Sangharsh (1999)/The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

My personal favorite in this list is the 1999 movie Sangarsh and how they brutally turned The Silence of the Lambs into a Romance. Akshay Kumar plays the role of Hannibal Lecter and bizarreness follows watch this video and you guys will understand what I am talking about.

IMDB rating
Sangharsh 7.2
The Silence of the Lambs 8.6

A clip from the movie to show the extreme bizarreness of it.

  • Ghajini (2008)/Memento (2000)

There’s a reason why Christopher Nolan is considered a movie God, you can’t just copy a Nolan movie and get away with it, despite copying the concept from Memento, Ghajini failed to create the magic that Nolan’s Memento did.

IMDB rating
Ghajini 7.3
Memento 8.5

Here’s what Christopher Nolan had to say about Memento being copied

  • Kyo Kii… Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta (2001)/Liar Liar (1997)

Despite straight up hating Bollywood, I personally like Govinda’s style of comedy and if they absolutely had to do a remake of Liar Liar I don’t think there was a better Bollywood actor for this job.

IMDB rating
Kyo Kii… Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta 5.2
Liar Liar 6.8

  • God Tussi Great Ho (2008)/Bruce Almighty (2003)

Apart from copying the movie, the director Rohit Dhawan also claimed that the script for his film is inspired from a village folk tale about a Brahmin as if he was the only one that watched Bruce Almighty.

IMDB rating
God Tussi Great Ho 3.6
Bruce Almighty 6.7
